Abbie Ivery could not use her washer or dryer due to aging electrical and
plumbing issues in her utility room. Failing window air conditioning units are
all she had in the hot summer months, and her lights worked only some of the
time. Everyday life is difficult for Ivery, 63, who works nights as a
residential caregiver for autistic adults and also takes care of grandchildren
on her off time.
On April 4, Builders Care, the nonprofit arm of the Lee Building Industry
Association, began over $40,000 worth of repairs on Ivery's home, located in
Fort Myers.
In a collaborative effort between Builders Care, the City of Fort Myers, McGarvey
Development and local subcontractors, volunteers installed a new roof, windows
and air conditioning. They also addressed hazardous electrical issues, plumbing
problems, rebuilt the kitchen and much more.
"Mrs. Ivery has been trying to get help for several years, and were happy
to be able to help her with the assistance of McGarvey Development and the City
of Fort Myers,"
said Heidi Davis, Builders Care executive director.
The project was completed in just 14 days. McGarvey Development was so
thrilled with the project and the building industry support that they included
new furniture, a stone paver back patio and new grill for the family to enjoy
among other things.
Amidst tears and cheers, Builders Care representatives, McGarvey
Development staff, volunteer subcontractors and local officials revealed the
home to Mrs. Ivery on April 18th. Mrs. Ivery had not seen her home in
two weeks. "She came home to a very different place then when she left just two
weeks ago. The volunteer effort here was tremendous," said Heidi Davis. A blue
tarp hid the home from Mrs. Ivery. Frank
Hunter, Project Manager with McGarvey Development, gave Abbie
keys to her new home. Then the tarp was dropped to reveal not only a beautiful
new home, but a safe and healthy environment for her and her family. When it was
all said and done, the value of the project for Mrs. Ivery reached over $85,000.
